Final Rental

Sunset Video, 4412 Delaney Ave. October 1996. Nine at night until midnight, and you are the only one on. Working the graveyard shift at the sketchiest video store in the sketchiest part of town, providing entertainment to some of the strangest customers around.

Tapes come back. Some are rewound, some are not, some are days overdue and the person handing them over has a story about why. You take the late fees, you run the unwound ones through the rewinder, and you put every tape back on the correct shelf.

The job is a real job

• Money is paper. It's 1996. Credit cards aren't commonplace yet. This video store doesn't have a (working) TV, much less a computer.
• Late fees are a dollar a day, two on a game. Not everyone agrees they are late.
• Seven runs to shelve. A tape on the wrong one counts against your shift. So does one you shelved without rewinding.
• The line is a line. Whoever reaches it first is first. Everyone has a fuse and the length of it depends on the individual.

And the people are the job

You never know who is going to walk through those doors. Some customers are patient. Other customers are rude. Customers may have kids waiting in the car while they find a family-friendly movie to rent. And some customers have no clue what a video store even is.

The description is all you get

Sometimes this area has a serial killer on the loose, going from business to business looking for the next victim... and it might just be you...

Luckily, the police are on the lookout, but they need your help to stop the killing spree!

If deputy tells you what they have, and it grows: three things to check on the first night, ten by the end of a long run.

The killer may come in first as a customer, browse, and check out a tape. He is the calmest person who will talk to you all night, and he will ask you questions. How you answer them changes how long you have later.

If you are sure: lock the front door, then pick up the phone, and protect yourself. The deadbolt only buys minutes, so you must strategize.

If you are wrong: they put a regular customer face down on the carpet in front of six people, and the district manager drives in at two in the morning to take your keys.

There is also CASUAL SHIFT, which is just the store and the regular craziness. Nobody is coming for you.

A pad is picked up the moment you touch it, and every prompt in the game re-labels itself in that pad's language — for Xbox or PlayStation controllers. Everything is rebindable under Options → Controller for any controller.
